Give Yourself the Gift of Happiness - Have a Positive Mindset

Updated: Jun 20, 2019

Maintaining a positive mindset is one part of practicing what Guy Winch Ph.D. , a licensed psychologist, keynote speaker and author of Emotional First Aid refers to as Emotional Hygiene.

The actual process of being mindful of our psychological health and adopting brief daily habits to monitor and address psychological wounds when we sustain them.

Just like we wash every day, put on deodorant and brush our teeth it's important to practice emotional hygiene. There are things we experience every day that can cause us to have what Zig Ziglar used to call Stinkin' Thinkin’.

Practicing emotional hygiene allows us to clean up this negative thinking and help keep our attitudes in check.

It's important to build a practice of having a positive mindset where you see problems as potential learning processes rather than just another hill to climb.

As part of our summer fun we enjoy actives on the lake. The kids love knee boarding around the little cove where we stay. When they first started out they only wanted to go in the morning when the water was nice and calm and there were very few waves.

Learning to ride the waves of life on Possum Kingdom Lake

However, they soon realized that just going round in round really wasn’t’ all that fun. They grew bored with the lack of challenge. So we began venturing out later in the afternoon when there were a lot of other boats out on the water creating lots of waves.

Now riding these waves were difficult at first and often they might even let go if they thought a particular set of waves looked too big for them to handle. I would circle back and round and ask why they let go and they would chastise me for not warning them about waves we were about to hit.

But slowly they began to brave the oncoming waves and each time they made it through it gave them confidence to face the next set. They learned a valuable lesson out there on the water. They learned that if they wanted to have fun waves where just part of the deal.

Rarely in life do we get calm waters to operate in. Accept waves are coming and see them as way to improve. Know that you're going to face plant from time to time, but failure is not fatal as long as you have the courage to ride again.

Each time out you'll build your confidence to handle future challenges and this will lead to success.
