Give Yourself the Gift of Happiness - Maintain Proper Perspective

Updated: Jun 20, 2019

How you react to situations determines how well you cope emotionally. Being able to keep perspective in the midst of a situation can help you better cope with it in a positive manner.

Are you turning molehills into mountains?

Let's say you are on your way to work and you get a flat tire. Rather than giving the flat tire the power to ruin your whole day, keep this inconveniences in proper perspective. At least you have a car to drive to work. Others would kill to have the inconvenience of a flat tire.

Often we are tempted to make mountains out of molehills, thinking that a single mistake will ruin our whole career. Instead of this negative response, respond by reframing the message that you tell yourself. Refuse to allow a pessimistic inner monologue to take hold.

When ever something happens ask yourself:

  1. Does this issue really matter?

  2. Is it important enough to address and will it even matter tomorrow, next week or next month?

  3. How will my reaction to this issue impact the people involved?

It takes practice but you can build the mental power needed to stop a single bad moment from ruining the whole day. Learn to laugh when something unexpected happens. Instead of trying to figure out why it happened to you simply state,

"That was interesting."

This will help head off an out of control downward spiral in your mood. It allows you to acknowledge what just happened and it gives you permission to move on.

Practice keeping your focus on what is going right, no matter how small and what you have to be grateful for every day. Don't let a bad five minutes turn into a bad 8 hours.
