By taking regular breaks, routinely leaving work on time and taking vacations we can maintain emotional wellness. Like giving our bodies rest after an intense day of working out, resting our minds is critical to keeping our emotions in check.
Sir Richard Branson is one for taking long vacations or simply spending time relaxing at home.
He says that being freed from the daily stresses of his working life, allows him to be more likely to have new insights into old problems and other flashes of inspiration.
And while we might not be able to retreat to a private island for weeks at a time we can find pockets of time in our schedule to unplug and enjoy the benefits that come from freeing ourselves from the daily grind.
You don't have to actually go anywhere. You go to your happy place in your mind. Simply close your eyes and take in a deep relaxing breath in and let it out. You may have to repeat this breathing exercise a couple of times depending on your level of stress at the time. Once you're ready, turn your awareness to a place where you feel the most at home and relaxed. Concentrate on visualizing it in great detail. What does it smell like? What does it sound like? How does it make you feel to be in that place.
For me that happy place is on the porch at our family's home on Possum Kingdom Lake. One of my favorite things to do is simply sit on the porch and watch the Sun fall behind the mountain across the lake. Its so peaceful and serene. I can't simply let my mind wonder and take in the beauty of the world around me. It's a reminder that I am part of something much larger than myself.
This time at the lake is a time for each family member to individually re-energize. Everyone undertaking a practical and unique way to soothe their spirit and renew their energy. This simple practice enhances everyone’s outlook on life.
We have to be intentional in practicing good self-care. Managing our emotional and psychological "lives" with great care and attention. Take the time to care for yourself and reap the benefits of the results. You can't care for others if you are first caring for yourself.
